Show Up & Shine

Home > Pastor's Blog > Show Up & Shine

Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.  Genesis 1:3-4

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overpower it. John 1:5

In both these texts the opening lines are, “In the beginning…”. John is the echo of Genesis through the millennia, hearkening us back to both our origin and our eternal future — both involving, you guessed it: God. And both having to do with the Light which God first creates and then causes to dwell within us. As Jesus and His word declares:

“In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.”

John 1:4

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

Matthew 5:14

“…prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God… in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world.”

Philippians 2:15

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,

a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession,

so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you

out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

1 Peter 2:10

We, the sons and daughters of God, are His marvelous light in the world with the expressed purpose to shine in the darkness. It is not our light, but His light with in us. As Paul reminds us:

“For God, who said, ‘Light shall shine out of darkness,’ is the One who has shone in our hearts to give us the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”

2 Corinthians 4:6

We are the vessels, jars of clay, in whom God chooses to shine. Filled with His life, love, and light, we are called to simply to show up and shine. When we show up, the light of God within us manifests in, through, and at times in spite of us… again we are but earthen vessels; we carry around in us the surpassing greatness of God (2 Corinthians 4:7).

Jesus is the example for us in showing up. Jesus, the Word, Who from the beginning was creating the heavens and earth, shows up as an infant lowly. Shows up as a young boy in the temple, His Father’s house. Shows up as the Jordan river to be baptized. Filled with the Holy Spirit Jesus shows up healing the sick, raising the dead, cleansing the lepers, casting out demons. Shows up forgiving sins. Shows up on a cross, crucified, died, buried, descended. Shows up resurrected and ascended. And the same Holy Spirit (who also by the way, was at the formation of the heavens and earth, hovering over the face of the deep with God the Father and the Son… Who now empowers us to show up and shine until He comes again. – Pastor Jon
