armor up!

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood…    Ephesians 6:12

Read that verse again… go ahead, I can wait… For our struggle is not against flesh and blood… so often it feels like it is and so often we take swings in vain at trying to overcome a bad habit, a destructive attitude, a troublesome behavior… and then Paul reminds us that the battle is in fact far bigger than we’ve dared to imagine.

The battle is bigger than you think. Daniel waits for an answer from the Lord for 21 days. Finally an angel of the Lord arrives and explains that though there was an immediate answer to his prayer, it was delayed because of the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly realms which is finally overcome by the archangel Michael (Daniel 10). The point is this: we are in a battle – and it’s not about managing bad behavior… it’s about an evil set against the people of God, intent on taking us out. To be arrogant or ignorant about this is neither wise nor bliss. It’s downright deadly.

We need the armor of God. Let us remember image of a soldier dressed in Saul’s misfitting armor, we need to take up the things God has prepared for us and us for: truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and the Word of God for the purpose of prayer. The purpose of this armor is for the powerfully effective purpose of praying at all times in the Spirit with all perseverance and petition (Ephesians 6:19). Do you want to overcome the lies and accusation that daily berate you and your family? Put on the Truth – Christ Himself  – who is Truth, declaring Who’s you are. Are you battling discouragement? Discover the breastplate and helmet which guards your heart and mind in the perfect joy and peace of God. Do you want to slay the dragons harassing your relationships (husband-wife, parent-child, co-workers, classmates? Learn how to wield the sword of the Spirit – God’s Word – to counter every assault of the enemy so you can know the joy of reconciliation and restoration.
