Call Committee Corner

The Call Committee (CC) has held a meeting every Wed morning in Aug, and will continue to do so in Sep, along with a working lunch after worship on Sep 16. A whiteboard has been placed in the hall for “Fellowship Forums” to collect your thoughts and to post our meeting minutes. Our Call Process GOAL Steps have also been added to the whiteboard to make you aware of progess.

The CC uses as a guideline our own PLC Constitution, Bylaws and Resolutions, the official LCMC Call Packet, and other resources for our work. You may go to https://www.lcmc.net/ and click on the Church Life tab to find a wealth of information at your disposal.

The Call Process is a lengthy and orderly one for good reason; therefore, we would ask your patience as we complete all steps in progression. The CC is in daily prayer, and being led by the Holy Spirit. We are certain God is already preparing our next Shepherd!

To allay any awkwardness or concern, Steve Hagler has very kindly informed us that he does not anticipate being called at PLC. His only expectation at this time is that God will call him to a LCMC congregation, including the possibility to serve as an interim pastor, once seminary graduation is complete. He is of the opinion that considering any specific person to serve PLC this early in the call process is premature.

Based on your input, and known PLC demographics and history, the CC completed our Congregational & Community Profiles in Aug. A very important piece, the Congregational Survey, was just distributed to your mailbox on Sun, Aug 26. We hope that you are already working on it to allow the CC to narrow congregational focus. Surveys are to be returned NO LATER than Sep 16, and ideally completed by every INDIVIDUAL (not as a couple) including confirmed youth. Surveys must be signed to be considered.

Surveys will then be tabulated, information given to you, and will be included in Pastor Packets that our delegates and CC representatives will be taking with them to the LCMC Gathering Oct 7-10. Our reps will be attending Call Committee workshops, and Pastor Meet & Greet sessions. You can see why it was paramount that two of our CC reps attend the Seminarian Retreat and Gathering (one at her own expense) this year!

Please keep the Call Committee in your daily prayers!

We hope you found the Prayer Sheet we provided helpful for your devotional time.

A praying church is a powerful church!

CC Members: Ken Birge, Chair Pr. Gail Gutterud, Lynn Affeldt, Ruth Clark, Margie Hill, Secretary Connie Arthur, with Alternates Kit Carey and Molly Shofner

GOAL for Call Process Steps

As we move through the various Call Steps, things can change dramatically as the Holy Spirit leads us. These steps are not in stone like the Ten Commandments, but are a working, changeable process. Much has already been accomplished in August!

  1. Fellowship Forum; Creation of Call Process & Timeline; Congregational & Community Profiles; Pastor Survey, review pastoral job description in Bylaws; compile pastor packets for the LCMC Gathering & beyond
  1. Advertising; accept resumes; prepare interview questions; request CDs/DVDs; read resumes
  1. Narrow search; begin phone interviews; narrow again; reference checks
  1. Presentation of candidates; personal visits/meet candidates and family
  1. Background check/credit report; recommend candidate; intro to congregation; schedule sermon
  1. Time to vote; extend the Letter of Call; set start date; installation!

PRAYERS FOR THE PLC CALL COMMITTEE AND CHURCH

The greatest asset we have as a committee and church is to be able to bring prayer to God’s process for a pastoral search. Prayer is the single most important part of the pastoral search! It helps us seek the pastor that God is already raising up for Peace Lutheran Church.  Pray with purpose with specific themes such as guidance, unity, discernment, patience, and wisdom. Some of the following scriptures may be helpful. Please share with the Call Committee any other prayers or scriptures that will be helpful during the call process.

Guidance: Ephesians 1:21-23; 4:25, Philippians 1:9-11, Psalm 25:8-10, Acts 6:3; 8:29

Unity and Fellowship: 1 Corinthians 1:10, Psalm 133:1, Isaiah 55:9, Jeremiah 32:17, John 10:11

Discernment: Luke 2:52, John 10:14, 1 Timothy 3:1-2, Hebrews 4:12, James 1:5, 1 Corinthians 14:33

Patience: Matthew 5:16; 24:13, Hebrews 12:1-2; 10:36, Romans 5:3-4; 12:12

Wisdom: Philippians 4:7, James 1:5-8, Ephesians 1:15-23, 1 Timothy 4:1-5, Hebrews 13:17, Proverbs 2:2-6, 2 Timothy 2:15, Colossians 4:5

PRAY WITH JOY

Expectantly

Each meeting of the PLC Call Committee is opened and ended with prayer. The congregation can help us pray during the pastoral search process, and through the joy of prayer, God’s plan for our new pastor will evolve: Romans 5:1-5, Peter 1:1-6; 8, Hebrews 10:34, Philippians 4:4-6; 1:4 Mark 1:35, John 15:7.

Intentionally

The Lord’s Prayer, in Matthew 6:9-15, is an example of intentional prayer. Focus on God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit’s leadership for the PLC Call process: Proverbs 3:5-6; 15:29, Colossians 4:2, 1 John1:9.

Pray to be able to see God’s hand and vision for our church and our pastoral search: Jeremiah 33:3, Galatians 6:9, 1 Timothy 4:5, Proverbs 29:18, Amos 3:7.

Pray for intentional zeal for Jesus Christ’s presence: John 15:1-8, Revelation 3:14-22, Romans 12:11.

Pray for unity of the Call Committee and the congregation during the entire Call process: Philippians 2:1-3, Ephesians 4:3, John 17:21, 1 Corinthians 1:10.

Pray for strength to carry out God’s vision and presence during the step-by-step Call Committee process: Ephesians 5:15-16, Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, Exodus 33:14, Revelation 3:1-6, 20.

Humbly

Pray for humble hearts that help us to have continued love for one another free from personal agenda: James 4:1-10, Psalm 139:23-24, Philippians 2:1-11, 2 Chronicles 7:14, Matthew 11:29

Pray that God binds us in love to our future pastor. Pray that we continue to show love and gratitude for our current pastor: 1 Peter 5:1-4, John 15:12-15, Acts 6:4, Jeremiah 3:15; 29:11.

Pray for this fruitful season with our beloved pastor. And, be blessed with answered prayers for our congregation and Call Committee as we prepare for the next journey with our future pastor:  John 15:16-17, 1 Peter 5:5-7, Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 4: 6-7, 2 Corinthians 9:8
