Jesus = Life, Liberty & Happiness!

Our Declaration of Independence affirms our right to “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Unfortunately, there are too many people in our society today who put little or no value on “Life”, have not had to suffer or fight for “Liberty”, and therefore, take freedom for granted, and are pursuing a false sense of “Happiness.” Surely the founders of this great nation of ours who risked everything and sacrificed their all would be saddened by this present state of affairs, although they also would be overjoyed that people still have these fundamental rights.

Our good and gracious God who created and gave us the gift of life, redeemed that life through his Son, Jesus Christ, and revealed to us where true happiness may be found, also must be saddened by our abuse of the life He has created, our rejection of the Savior He sent us, and our selfish desire to pursue the things of this world. God must also be overjoyed that his Word is still proclaimed, his Son is still believed in, and by the power of his Holy Spirit, his love still abounds in the hearts and lives of those who follow Jesus.

St. Paul’s letter to the Galatians has been called the Christian’s Declaration of Independence.  The Apostle writes, “For freedom Christ has set us free.” (Galatians 5:1) If you want real freedom, it can only be found in Christ. This freedom enables us to live by the power of the Holy Spirit, and produce the fruit of the Spirit, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” (Galatians 5:22) Now that’s a life lived in freedom with true happiness!

In John’s Gospel Jesus tells us, “If you continue in my Word, you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” (John 8:31-32)  Also, “If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36) God’s Word is truth, and unless we know God’s Word we cannot know truth. Unless we know God’s Son, Jesus, the living Word, we cannot really be free.

Do you really want “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness?” God in Jesus Christ makes it available! Have a safe and happy Independence Day Fourth of July!
