You Will Be My Witnesses…

Scripture: “But when the Holy Spirit comes to you, you will receive power. You will be my witnesses—in Jerusalem, in all of Judea, in Samaria and in every part of the world.” (Acts 1:8)

Dear Peace Lutheran Family of God:

For us at Peace Lutheran, June is the month of weddings, graduations, confirmations, and Lutherhaven camp.  It’s a time that we all hope to see flowers and sunny days. For the kids it’s s’mores and hot dogs over a fire. For the grownups it’s yard work and iced tea or lemonade. It is our expectations for summer. When I was a kid summer was a lazier time…not so many absolute schedules. I lived on a farm, so it was also a time of more work. But when it’s work that is done outside on sunny and beautiful days…who cares! Well, except for mosquitos!! This June, the summer activities and special events pale alongside of what is once again celebrated on the day of Pentecost.

Read the above scripture out loud. You’ve heard it over and over all your life. My question is this: Do you believe it? Have you read the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? The men that you read about in those books are not the same men that you see in the book of Acts. Oh yes, the faces and the names are the same, but those men in the Gospels had fears and doubts. Those disciples wanted to believe that Jesus was who He said He was, but so much of His teachings didn’t make sense to them.

The men in the book of Acts, however, are on a mission. Same men, same names, same faces…but changed inside and out! They have seen the Resurrected One who, for three years, walked with them…talked with them…loved them and understood their failures. They have seen the man who was crucified and died and rose again. This Jesus has sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in them. They no longer have doubts…we don’t even read about fear…just POWER!

June 4th this year, is the day of Pentecost. Pentecost was a day that changed the world…that changed the disciples…that changes us. This is the day that the Holy Spirit was poured out on the believers. The Spirit of God…poured out! What an image! God pouring His Spirit into us! I can almost hear Him saying “Oops…it’s running over!” as He continues pouring out His abundance…filled to the top and then some! You see, before that happened, the disciples actually sat at the feet of the Son of God, but didn’t really get it. They were face to face with the Father, but didn’t realize it. They were learning, but not understanding. AND THEN…here it comes!  Washing over, seeping into, filling up and indwelling…THE SPIRIT OF GOD!

That is the Spirit that you received in your baptism. The One that has changed you. The One that waits for you to ask so that He may give you more than you can imagine. This is the Spirit that will give our Confirmands voices to affirm in public their faith and trust in Jesus. This is the Spirit that will continue to walk out into the world with our graduates. This is the Spirit that will be present at the weddings and at the Servanthood Mission of our Youth at Camp Lutherhaven this year. This is the very present and real Jesus Christ living in us.

HALLELUJAH!!!
