Pushing Back the Dark

Home > Pastor's Blog > Pushing Back the Dark

I mentioned a new Christian song by Josh Wilson, “Pushing Back the Dark”, in the annual report. I have been captivated by the lively melody, and enlightening words that seem to speak so clearly to the mission Christ has given his Church as we face the darkness of this world’s sin.  Here are the words for you to consider:

One million reasons why… you shouldn’t even try.

After all you’re just one heart…a single candle in the dark.

And there are shadows here… feeding on your fears,

That you don’t have what it takes…who are you to make a change?

But oh, oh, don’t underestimate the God you follow.

(Chorus)

Whatever you do just don’t look back.  Oh, somebody needs the light you have.

Whatever you do just don’t lose heart.  Keep on pushing back the dark,

Keep on pushing back the dark!

The city on a hill, it should be shining still.

Every sinner saved by grace, has a purpose, has a place.

Inside the bigger plan, we might not understand.

But if we just keep walking on…we will see the Kingdom come, yeah (Chorus)

Let your lights all shine, let your lights all shine.

Oh, oh, don’t underestimate the God you follow

He is the light that burns inside your soul,

So keep on shining ‘til the whole world knows. (Chorus)

When you feel like you’re too small…to do any good at all

Like a sunrise through the window…like a symphony crescendo

We are waking up again, we are rising from the dead

We are shining like the stars…we are pushing back the dark! (Chorus)

I hope our congregation learns this song and adopts it as a theme and vision for action this year. We are a well-established church with the abundant blessings and resources God has given us. We have been called in Baptism to “Let our lights so shine before others that they may see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.” We are a well-lighted church, not just in terms of our facilities and parking lot, but each one of us who worships here has the light of Christ shining through us. Let that light shine brightly so we “keep on pushing back the dark”, and those who live in darkness see the saving light of our Lord Jesus Christ!

LENT begins this year on March 5th with Ash Wednesday.  Our Wednesdays will include a soup supper at 6:00 p.m., followed by worship at 7:00 p.m.  Dramas will be presented of the prominent Biblical characters in Christ’s passion as they have a face-to-face dialogue with God!
